Monroe College Confers Degrees on 2,600 Students Representing 53 Countries at 85th Annual Commencement

Monroe College, a national leader in educating urban and international students, held its 85th Annual Commencement on June 13, 2018 at Radio City Music Hall in midtown Manhattan. Benjamin Tucker, the First Deputy Commissioner of the New York Police Department, and Marcos Crespo, a member of the New York State Assembly, gave the keynote addresses. Two separate ceremonies were held to accommodate the families and friends of the 2,600 students earning Associate, Bachelor's or Master's degrees and professional certificates.

University of Scranton Undergraduate Commencement

The University of Scranton conferred more than 890 bachelor's and associate's degrees at its undergraduate commencement on May 27 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre. Very Reverend Timothy P. Kesicki, S.J., president of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States, read the remarks of the principal speaker Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, who was unable to attend the ceremony in person because he is undergoing treatment for a form of acute leukemia. Both Father Kesicki and Bishop Murry, in absentia, received honorary degrees from the University. Honorary degrees were also presented to Sister Ann Walsh, I.H.M., former CEO and current assistant director of Friends of the Poor; William Whitaker, founding president of the Washington Jesuit Academy, Washington. D.C.; and Cecelia Lynett Haggerty, Times-Shamrock Communications and former University trustee.

On May 9, more than 300 Wesleyan students received University prizes and awards during a reception. Wesleyan's awards, prizes, and scholarships program connects recipients to the legacies of alumni, administrators, faculty, and friends of the university whose lives and work are honored through endowed gifts. Recipients of the academic scholarships, fellowships, and prizes represent the highest ideals of Wesleyan--intellectual curiosity, academic excellence, creative expressoin, leadership, and service.

More than 200 Students Present at SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference

More than 200 SUNY Oneonta students were selected to present at the 2018 SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC), hosted by SUNY Oneonta on April 20. Students from 28 SUNY colleges and universities presented 179 research projects in two poster sessions, and another 100 projects in oral presentations throughout the day. Every spring, SURC brings together undergraduate researchers and faculty mentors for two daylong programs of presentations, performances, art displays and poster sessions held on two separate campuses. The second SURC event was April 21, at Monroe Community College in Rochester.

Twenty four students attain National Tutoring Association Certification

Twenty four peer tutors through SUNY Oneonta's Center for Academic Development & Enrichment have attained National Tutoring Association Level 1 Certification. In addition to being recommended as a peer tutor by a faculty member in each department for which the tutor provides tutoring, these tutors have completed at least eight hours of training and have completed at least 10 hours of supervised tutoring. Their Level 1 certification is valid for two years.

CCU's Honors Program graduates its largest class in program history

Eighty-one Coastal Carolina University students are graduating from the institution's Honors Program. Each graduate has completed a rigorous curriculum composed of at least 24 hours of honors work, including a final honors thesis/project achieving a cumulating grade point average of at least 3.50. The cumulative GPA of the spring graduating class is 3.79. Students presented their work in public forums more than 75 times at conferences or research competitions and have earned numerous awards.

Faculty members at the State University of New York at Geneseo have elected 79 students to the college's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most widely known academic honor society. More than 50 students receive Academic Achievement Awards

SUNY Oneonta recognized more than 50 outstanding students during an Academic Achievement Awards reception on May 3. One to three students were chosen from each of the college's academic departments and programs to receive the 2018 Academic Achievement Awards. Each student selected one faculty guest to accompany them to the recognition event. In addition to their excellent work in the classroom, students were honored for distinguishing themselves in many ways, including research, activism, mentoring, athletics, involvement in campus activities and volunteerism.

Students volunteer in New Orleans wetlands

Eighteen students traveled to New Orleans from Feb. 24 to March 4 to complete wetlands restoration service-learning projects in the Lower Ninth Ward. Working with a nonprofit organization called Common Ground Relief, the students planted hardy, fast-growing native plants and removed invasive species in coastal areas imperiled by hurricanes, development and engineering projects that have eroded land and endangered wildlife.
